Ms. Kim was born in Toronto, Canada and started piano at the age 6. Entering many competitions at a young age, she was sent from the Peel Music Festival to compete for the Rosebowl at the age of 14, and at the age of 17, came in second place in the concerto competition in the Festival. Alongside with her studies, Ms. Kim began teaching piano and saxophone, conducting brass and woodwind rehearsals within her community, and also started accompanying. In 1998, she graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music with a degree in Piano Performance and continued to pursue her academic and musical studies at the University of Toronto, studying with Canadian composer Larysa Kuzmenko, and other professors such as Marietta Orlov and William Aide. Completing her Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance in 2002, she was able to perform in masterclasses and receive coachings from groups such as the St. Lawrence String Quartet. Desiring to continue her focus on teaching and academics, in 2003, Ms. Kim moved to New York City to pursue her Masters Degree at the Manhattan School of Music studying under Dr. Arkady Aronov, graduating in 2005. She also had the privilege of studying with Dr. Deirdre O’Donohue, also affiliated with Manhattan School of Music and New York University. Ms. Kim received her Doctoral Degree from Rutgers University in May 2011 under professors Susan Starr and Daniel Epstein. She also participated in performances in Rutgers Chamber concerts, solo recitals and performances at Weill Carnegie Hall under the direction of Prof. Min Kwon.
Ms. Deborah Kim has joined the faculty of the Piano School of NYC in 2007 and continues to teach and accompany. Her motivation to reach, connect, and build friendships with children through music continues to grow through the children she meets throughout New York City.
This year, Ms. Deborah Kim was invited to become the Queens Manager of the Piano School of NYC. She will be in charge of arranging Group classes at schools as well as enrollment for Private students. She looks forward to this new chapter in her life, and is excited about serving many students and families in Queens, NY.
